PHYSICAL NATURES: CHILDREN SERIES
by Debra Rueb

My photographs are about the physical natures of children. I am exploring and recording visually while they are exploring physically their own inherent tendencies and capabilities. Children due to their young age have a natural freedom and unrepressed reaction to their environment. They have the ability to express without the inhibitions that adults have.

My series consists of photographs taken from many different events or activities of children. I have photographed swim meets, tae kwon do classes, my niece and nephew jumping on a trampoline, at a small private school and other locations. These photographs depict focused activities. Some are structured activities and others have the approach of total abandon, such as, the jumping on the trampoline images.

The swim meet photographs are about the controlled energy that is bound and then released in a calculated way with precise goals. There is an exhilaration there of the physical freedom of weightlessness and the mental challenge of competition with the desire to win. My expectations are to be there and capture the feelings and record the energy of the moment.

These photographs attempt to record the range of attitudes and behaviors displayed by the younger generation. This ongoing project of documenting the activities of children follows a long photographic tradition of capturing action on film.
