Tammy's Story Debra Rueb Photography

Tammy's Biography and Personal Story

Tammy is actually my doll that I played with as a young girl. She came out in the 50's and was a not-as-popular alternative to Barbie. Tammy grew up with the Cinderella complex feeling not appreciated and often not noticed in the shadow of Barbie's towering figure. But Tammy has come into her own as she entered her 40's. Tammy is approximately the same size as Barbie and gets along and plays well with her, most of the time. She takes much delight in the fact she stole Ken from Barbie. Like Pinocchio, Tammy, thanks to Debra, has been blessed with the ability to come to life. Tammy has started coming to life, living out many of the dreams and fantasies Debra does not dare. Tammy is having real adventures with real people.

This series attempt to make the viewer see Tammy as a real person doing everyday and not so everyday things. Tammy is also a tool for exploring language. Tammy often sees and does things literally. Tammy is acting out metaphors, clichés and puns.

Through the process of PhotoShop I am also creating diptych diagrams. These are photographs of diagram sentences where images represent words. These are made in diagram sentence form; which I learned in grammar or English class when I was young. A diagram sentence photograph is coupled with a photograph illustrating the sentence or the same idea visually. The challenge is to decode the message.
